Stockholm University’s research group “AI and Law” is one of eleven new research groups that gets support within The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program – Humanities and Society (WASP-HS). The program now expands its contribution to the humanities and social sciences research for studies on the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.

There is a lot of talk about Cloud Act and its implications. AI Sweden will, together with Google, Peltarion and MAQS Law Firm, try to straighten out some questions and misconceptions related to the regulation during a webinar on October 22, 2020. Post-Doctoral Fellow Liane Colonna has been appointed to be the Action Vice Chair in the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action entitled Network on Privacy-Aware Audio- and Video-Based Applications for Active and Assisted Living (“GoodBrother”).

The aim of GoodBrother is to increase the awareness on the ethical, legal, and privacy issues associated to audio- and video-based monitoring and to propose privacy-aware working solutions for assisted living, by creating an interdisciplinary community of researchers and industrial partners from different fields (computing, engineering, healthcare, law, sociology) and other stakeholders (users, policy makers, public services), stimulating new research and innovation. GoodBrother will offset the “Big Brother” sense of continuous monitoring by increasing user acceptance, exploiting these new solutions, and improving market reach.

The International Conference on Information Systems Security and Privacy provides a meeting point for researchers and practitioners, addressing the security and privacy challenges of information systems from both technological and social perspectives. The conference welcomes papers of either practical or theoretical nature, and is interested in research or applications addressing all aspects of security and privacy, and encompassing issue of concern for organizations, individuals and society at large.

The Swedish Law and Informatics Research Institute (IRI), the Swedish Association for IT and Law (SIJU) and the Swedish Trust for Legal Information arrange the XXXV Nordic Conference in Law and IT. The Conference is held in Stockholm on November 11-12, 2020. The theme this year is Law in the era of AI.

Calls for changes to the regulatory paradigm for content moderation on social media platforms have been growing recently. One such proposal comes from the 2019 Israel Democracy Institute (IDI)/Yad Vashem Recommendations for Reducing Online Hate Speech, which consists of a list of measures formulated by an international team of researchers working under the guidance of senior human rights experts (including serving U.N. rapporteurs and past and present U.N. treaty body members) and under the coordination of Prof. Yuval Shany who coordinated the process of formulating the recommendations on behalf of IDI. The webinar will present the recommendations and discuss more generally about the challenges of online hate speech and social media platforms. The event will be held on September 24, 2020, and is free of charge (upon online registration).

In June 2018, the European Commission appointed a “AI High Level Expert Group” (AI-HLEG) to support the implementation of the European Strategy on Artificial Intelligence. One of the first results of the AI-HLEG has been to deliver ethics guidelines on Artificial Intelligence (https://ec.europa.eu/futurium/en/ai-alliance-consultation/guidelines). These guidelines put forward a human-centered approach to AI, and list seven key requirements that human-centered, trustworthy AI systems should meet. Many of today’s most popular AI methods, however, fail to meet these guidelines: making them compliant is a scientific endeavor that is as crucial as it is challenging and stimulating.

1st International Workshop on New Foundations for Human-Centered AI will collectively address the fundamental questions of what are the scientific and technological gaps that we have to fill in order to make AI systems “human-centered” in terms of the above guidelines.

The workshop is part of ECAI-2020, the European Conference on AI, held on Aug 29 – Sep 8.

The Network of Centers (NoC) has launched a new joint project exploring ”The Ethics of Digitalisation: From Principles to Practice.” Led by the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), the Berkman Klein Center, and the Digital Asia Hub, and in collaboration with other NoC research centers, the project advances dialogue and action at the intersection of science, politics, digital economy, and civil society. Digitalization efforts are rapidly proliferating across sectors, prompting new and large-scale ethical challenges that arise from technological development and deployment that have important rights and justice implications. The project will engage interdisciplinary networks of scholars and students, as well as civil society groups, policymakers, and other stakeholders in order to advance research outputs with social relevance in application-related and practice-based contexts such as content moderation, tech-assisted learning, or well-being.

There is an increasing public pressure on platform companies to more soundly police the content on their sites. To address this, platforms are turning to algorithmic content moderation systems. These systems prioritize content that promises to increase engagement and block content that is deemed illegal or is infringing the platforms own policies and guidelines. But content moderation is a ‘wicked problem’ that raises many questions all of which eschew simple answers. Where is the line between hate speech and freedom expression – and how to automate and deploy this on a global scale? Are platforms overblocking legitimate content, or are they rather failing to limit illegal speech on their sites? This is just one of the many pressing issues related to platform governance – a number of which will be addressed in an interdisciplinary research sprint on “AI and platform governance” offered virtually at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG). Applications from advanced PhD researchers and early post-docs with diverse backgrounds (IT, law, political sciences and related fields) are invited to join the research sprint from 17th of August 2020 to 25th of October 2020.

Svenska föreningen för upphovsrätt (SFU) har beslutat att årets SFU-pris ska tilldelas Ulrika Norlin för uppsatsen “Kreativ artificiell intelligens och upphovsrättsliga utmaningar”. Ulrika Norlin läser juristprogrammet vid Stockholms universitet. Uppsatsen handleddes och examinerades av IRI:s medarbetare Johan Axhamn (handledare) och Cecilia Magnusson Sjöberg (examinator). Antalet digitala vårdtjänster har exploderat under det senaste decenniet men lagstiftningen hänger inte med. Befintlig och tillkommande reglering behöver IT-anpassas, enligt juridikprofessor Cecilia Magnusson Sjöberg, författare till rapporten “E-hälsa som app – dataskydd och datadelning” som tagits fram i samarbete med SNS (Studieförbundet Näringsliv och Samhälle). Samtidigt är det viktigt att undvika alltför teknikspecifika lösningar som snabbt blir föråldrade. Bygg istället upp testmiljöer där juridiken får spela en proaktiv roll för att skapa rättsenliga IT-lösningar, rekommenderar Magnusson Sjöberg.
